I really enjoy using my hands and creating things. There’s something so satisfying about having an idea come together and then getting to display it in our home. Not always do things turn out exactly how I imagined, but most of the time it’s good enough to proudly display… and if not, well we learn for next time! Ha!
A few years ago, I got into painting door mats. I spent hours getting ready for my first Christmas market, completed quite a few custom orders and really loved making them.
Then life happened.
I got pregnant with our third baby, life got busier and painting door mats slowly became one of those hobbies that got pushed aside.
We moved a stack of blank coir mats around different areas in our house multiple times… ok well honestly my husband did the heavy lifting while I kept saying “I’d do something with them eventually!”
One day I was feeling a little grumpy and needed something to take my mind off things. So I finally grabbed one of the blank mats and got creative!
I used my Cricut to cut out a couple floral stencils and originally planned to stencil the word “Hello” too.
I decided to freehand the lettering instead, something I have never tried before.
Was it perfect? Definitely not.
Do I love how it turned out? Absolutely!
A few of my girlfriends loved it too, so I ended up making up three more! Now we all have matching welcome mats!

How I Made It
- I cut three floral stencil’s from cardstock using my Cricut.
- I pinned the stencil securely onto the coir mat using a sewing pin.
- Using a chip brush, I dabbed white outdoor paint over the stencil. (I found dabbing worked much better than brushing.)
- Once I covered the space well with paint, I removed the stencil carefully.
- I repeated steps 2-4, rotating between my three stencils placing the flowers randomly around the mat.
- Instead of using a stencil for the word “Hello,” I decided to freehand it with black outdoor acrylic paint.
- I let the paint dry completely before spraying it with an outdoor fabric water shield spray.
What I Used
- IKEA Trampa Coir Door Mat (You can also find similar blank coir mats online)
- Craft Smart Outdoor Acrylic Paint (White and Pure Black)
- ½” chip brush
- Cricut Explorer Air 2
- Cardstock paper for the stencil
- Scotchgard Fabric Water Shield/Protector Spray
This project reminded me how much I love making things.
Sometimes all it takes is a simple creative project to completely change the mood of your day.
Now I have a beautiful homemade door mat and I was definitely less grumpy after getting creative for a bit! I started this mat feeling grumpy and by the time I was finished, I had a new welcome mat for our front door… and a much better attitude.
A Few Tips If You Want to Make Your Own
- You can reuse your cardstock stencil throughout your project.
- Don’t overthinking the placement of your flowers, random looks beautiful.
- Spraying it with the waterproof protector is not a must, but it will help it last longer.
- Most importantly, have fun with it! It doesn’t have to be perfect to turn out beautifully!
